The real fact is that you can preserve the paint by using the thinner so that you can reuse it later. The thinner will give the consistent and quality finish even you spray on the rough surface.

Methods to Prepare Paint Thinner

Adding the suitable amount of thinner to the paint gives a good consistency and also helps in saving your money. You can prepare the thinner at your home itself and make sure you are keeping the paint in the warm temperature before adding the thinner to change the texture.

Before starting the thinning process check the type of the paint, here you can get all regarding details to make paint thinner. Just follow the below steps to achieve the best result.

1) Thinner for Oil-Based Paints

Usually, the thinners are used to remove oil paints from the brushes or rollers, but you can also use it to make the paint thin. When you keep the paint in the open atmosphere without using the closure it becomes hard but you can reduce its viscosity by adding the thinner.

Take half cup of lemon oil and one cup of linseed oil in the bowl and mix it well using the spoon or mixer. Then add the mixture slowly into the container containing paint and stir it for some time until it mixes completely, keep it separately for few minutes.

If the consistency is not good, add a little amount of thinner and make sure you are not including too much as it will not mix with the paint.

2) Using Mineral Spirit or Acetone for Oil-Based Paints

You can get both the products easily from the local stores and you can check out wonders in the paint texture. It is necessary to wear goggles, face mask, and gloves while preparing the solution because it will generate fumes which affect your health and at times there are chances for the serious breathing problem.

Try to work in the good airflow area in order to avoid such problems, keep the doors and window open while painting and put the fan near the open area to reduce more fumes or pollutant.

If you find any solid paint after adding the thinner, then remove it using the strainer because it causes difficulty while painting and don’t blow dust into the paint. Take the acetone and mineral spirit, add it to the paint slowly and make sure the paint is thrice the amount of thinner. It depends upon the quantity of paint and this can be measured by yourself.

Mix the thinner and paint thoroughly until it reaches the original consistency and then apply the paint over the surface, if it sticks to the surface easily then the paint is ready to use.

3) Thinner for Water-Based Paints

Take a large bowl to thin the paint and pour the half amount of paint into the bucket. Add a half cup of water for each gallon of paint. Stir the mixture thoroughly and remove the chunks.

Then follow the same procedure for the remaining paint and pour it in the viscosity cup to check the consistency for all the batches. If the texture is not same then add the small amount of water and mix it thoroughly.

Safety Tips

  • Always remember to wear gloves, respirator goggles, and face mask.
  • Don’t store thinner or paint in the open space.
  • It is recommended to have a fire extinguisher because some solvents are flammable.

There is various thinner are available in the market for the different types of paint to reduce the viscosity.

Mix it carefully, if you add it more than the required amount, then it will affect the quality of the paint. If it is thin, then it can flow easily through the spray gun and try to remove the large solid particles to avoid clogging of the device.
